Michele Rak (Born 30 October 1940, Naples) is an Italian academic and writer. == Biography == Michele Rak is a writer, theorist, literary critic and an expert on cultural dynamics and the function of artistic communication in social changes. Regarded as one of the leading European experts in Heritage Studies, he has been appointed as a Member of the European Panel for the European Heritage Label - The European Union (Brussels). He is one of the 13 independent experts appointed by the European Parliament to both award the ‘European identity’ brand and highlight the European heritage (Decision 1194/2011/EU). As a cultural historian, Michele Rak has published extensively on early modern popular culture and the arts with a focus on traditions and cultural identity of social groups. As an expert on baroque culture, Rak has worked on academies, festivities, fairy-tale studies, poetry, theatre, iconography and the tradition of votive paintings in early modern southern Italy. As an expert on fairy-tales studies he has published monographs and critical editions of texts such Giambattista Basile's Lo cunto de li cunti, (Giambattista Basile, Cunto de li cunti 1986); on theory and the history of European fairy tales (Logica della fiaba 2005, Da Cenerentola a Cappuccetto rosso. Storia breve della fiaba barocca 2007); and popular literature in southern Italy between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries (Napoli Gentile, 1995). Since 1970 he has also published novels, notably a thriller in 2010 entitled La Venere perduta (Salani). He has taught Sociology of Literature at the University of Naples, Federico II (1965–1986); Italian Literature at the University of Palermo (1986–1989); Sociology of mass communication at the School of Journalism and Media Studies, LUISS University, Rome (1989–1990) and at the School for Foreign Trade, University of Siena (1991–1993); Sociology of Literature, Theory and History of literary genres at the University of Siena (1989–2010). Michele Rak is the founder and former director of the Doctoral School of ‘Textual studies’ and former academic coordinator of the section on ‘Literature, visual culture and communication' (1998-2010), University of Siena; and a former director of the ‘European Observatory on Reading’ also known as ‘The University of Siena and the University of Salento Research (2010-2012). He has founded the ‘Museo della Lana’ (Museum of Wool), Church of Saint John the Baptist, Scanno, Italy; the virtual Museum of Peligni community (Abruzzo); the Museum of Cilento (Cilento); the ‘Fototeca di Roma’ (Photographic Library), Rome which provides access to 7,000,000 historical photographic resources collected from private archives.
